In Greek mythology ‘Alkionides’ are the halcyon days that the Gods gave to the kingfisher to lay its eggs in the midst of winter. Alkionides UK Charity, celebrating ten years of volunteerism, was established to similarly brighten the lives of Cypriot patients sent to the UK for urgent medical treatment that is not available in Cyprus. Alkionides UK provides free accommodation in central London, at what we call the ‘Nest’. Volunteers in the Midlands help patients at Birmingham hospitals and children with special needs. Dedicated volunteers fundraise throughout the year to cover the enormous costs as well as provide moral support and translation services. The work of the charity is greatly recognized by the Cyprus Government and the High Commissioner, patron of the charity.
